How tight should excavator tracks be?

Share

When operating heavy machinery like industrial excavators it’s important to make sure they’re in the best working order, not only from an operational and efficiency point of view but also from a safety point of view.

In this blog, we’ll explore the ideal tension for your excavator tracks and whether there is such a thing as too tight or too loose. Keep reading to find out more!

What is the ideal track tension?

There’s lots of advice out there about the ideal tightness for tracks, however we would always recommend reading the operator’s manual for your excavator. This manual should give you the requirements on track tension, taking into consideration the exact make and model of your machine. Alternatively, get in touch with your local dealer who should also be able to help.

Can you over tighten tracks?

The short answer to this is yes. Applying too much tension to your tracks can cause undue and wear and damage to the track components, especially idlers and sprockets.

Over tensioning tracks will result in a significant reduction in wearlife of your tracks and should be avoided. Operation in heavy sand or mud can increase track tension, it is sensible to reduce track tension slightly in those conditions.

To ensure you’re applying the correct tension make sure to read the user’s manual for your specific excavator.

Can your track be too loose?

Again the answer to this is yes. If there is not enough tension on the tracks this can cause excessive sagging and may ultimately lead to derailing of the tracks and damage to components.

Again, refer to your user’s manual for the best advice on your machine.

The importance of maintaining your excavator tracks

We all know that excavator tracks play a crucial role in the performance of your machine, providing stability and traction, and helping to distribute the weight of the machine and the load

it carries. That’s why it’s essential to maintain your excavator tracks to ensure the longevity of your machinery and to prevent costly repairs.

Track tension is one of the most important aspects of maintaining your tracks to ensure that they fit and function correctly. Tracks that are too loose can cause de-tracking, while tracks that are too tight can cause rapid wear and tear. Regularly checking the tension of the tracks and making adjustments as necessary can help to prolong the life of the tracks and the excavator itself.
